Nick Mitchell in the heat of a battle with "Grace"
Knowing when and how to modify the workout of the day is a very important skill to develop as a CrossFitter. Most of us are fairly comfortable with lowering the weights which are prescribed, but how about the number of sets or number of reps?
Let's use pull-ups as an example. A good modification for workouts with lots of pull-ups (besides using the bands) would be to do less of them. Just because many of us can do pull-ups, that doesn't mean we're all ready to do 100+ of them in a workout. At least not quite yet! This kind of modification works really well with other gymnastic movements such as push-ups, handstand push-ups, box jumps, muscle-ups, etc.
Another great way to modify a workout is to change the movement all together. Don't quite yet have the flexibility for an overhead squat? Try replacing it with a slightly heavier front squat. Don't have the flexibility for a front squat? Replace it with an even heavier high-bar back squat. The possibilities are only limited by your creativity!
So, leave your ego at the door and open your mind to some new modifications. It's not a sign of weakness...it's a sign of training maturity!
